Indonesia’s Electric Vehicle Industry Praised by Inchcape Automotive Indonesia President Director

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Director of PT Inchcape Automotive Indonesia, Khoo Shao Tze praised the government’s strategy in developing the industry electric vehicle in the Motherland. The Indonesian government, said Shao Tze, chose the right step to focus on the main strength of the Republic of Indonesia, namely natural resources (SDA).

Super intelligent. On the one hand, (Indonesia) is a producer nickel the world’s biggest, and after that they can say, ‘can’t be exported, it has to be processed here’, this makes manufacturers come, make batteries here,” said Shao Tze when met by Tempo at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2023 on Thursday, August 10, 2023

Focusing on the electric battery industry, Shao Tze thinks, is a very good strategy.

According to him, although buyer incentives remain important, determining the initial focus on natural resources is the right step in the long term. “(Incentives) still have to be done, but the Indonesian government is very methodical in looking at this,” he said.

Inchcape stated that it is ready to help the Indonesian government to become a catalyst for the growth of the electric vehicle industry in the country.

In the future, Shao Tze believes, all markets will move towards electric battery vehicles (BEVs). “This is unavoidable, because of that we need countries that can adapt to these changes,” he said.

Shao Tze sees that Indonesia, as the largest market in Southeast Asia, is transforming towards electrification and new energy. “We believe Indonesia will become a leader (in this sector), not only in ASEAN but also globally.”

For now, Inchcape Indonesia will still focus on marketing premium and luxury class electric cars. However, Shao Tze did not rule out the possibility of bringing an electric car brand with a more affordable class in the future.

The President Director of Inchcape Indonesia compared Indonesia with China which has the largest new energy market in the world. However, unlike China, he believes that the Indonesian market does not yet have a clear division of the electric car market.

“(In China) they have a market for premium, luxury and mass electric vehicles. We believe Indonesia will move in the same direction,” said Shao Tze.

Because of that, he also revealed that his party was very excited about welcoming the arrival of a new energy market in Indonesia and opening up the possibility of bringing other brands into the country.

World automotive distributor Inchcape Motors Private Ltd. (Inchcape) is again expanding its wings in Indonesia. After first appearing in Indonesia under the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in 2021, Inchcape is now preparing to become a distributor and assembler of Mercedes-Benz in the country. In addition, this British company will also bring in three new brands from China, namely Haval, Ora and Tank at the end of 2023.
