Indonesians in South Korea Urged to Avoid Martial Law Drama

Indonesia has advised its citizens in South⁣ Korea to steer clear of the country’s political turmoil following‍ a ‍brief but dramatic episode of martial law.

The international community‌ was stunned when South Korean President Yoon Suk ⁢Yeol declared martial law, granting temporary rule to the military during ⁤emergencies. Though, the measure ⁢was short-lived, lasting only six hours⁣ before South Korean lawmakers swiftly voted against it.

Indonesia has confirmed the⁤ safety of all its citizens residing in South Korea. judha nugraha, the Foreign Affairs‍ Ministry’s director for citizen protection, stated that Indonesians, like moast people in South Korea, have resumed their normal routines. Though, as the political drama unfolded, Judha urged Indonesians to avoid large gatherings.

“While things ⁣have returned to normal, Indonesians in South Korea need to remain cautious. Please stay away from riots and mass gatherings. Do not get involved in [South Korea’s] domestic politics,”⁢ Judha told a ‍press briefing on Thursday.

According to Judha, the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul has a contingency plan in place⁣ should the situation deteriorate. As of ⁤September 2023, there are 55,991 Indonesians living in South Korea, according to embassy data. At present, indonesia does ⁤not see the need to evacuate its citizens.

Jakarta has refrained from commenting on the martial law incident beyond its focus on citizen safety.

“When it comes to the situation⁣ in South ⁣Korea,‍ our main focus is to make ⁤sure that our citizens are safe. We are ⁢in no position to comment on South Korea’s internal dynamics,” the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Roy Soemirat said.

President Yoon justified the short-lived martial law by claiming it was necessary to protect the country from pro-North Korean forces. South Korea’s main opposition party has called for Yoon’s immediate resignation ‌or impeachment in the wake of‍ the martial law declaration. The country’s national assembly is scheduled to vote on his impeachment on Saturday.
