Indonesian Ulema Council Deputy Secretary General Reacts to Shooting Incident in Jakarta Office

Deputy Secretary General (Wasekjen) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Law and Human Rights (HAM), Ikhsan Abdullah said the shooting by an unknown person in his office caused fear or terror. He hoped that people would remain calm and not feel afraid.

“This attack caused fear or in another language terror,” Ikhsan told reporters at the MUI building, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (2/5/2023).

According to Ikhsan, the shooting incident was an unexpected disaster. However, the MUI still views this attack as a legal event that must be thoroughly investigated by the police.

“We have left it to the state apparatus, namely the police to investigate what the motive for the attack was,” said Ikhsan.

Ikhsan said that in the future, MUI would seek input from the National Police regarding standard operating procedures (SOP) for security in the MUI building. He said security would be tightened by asking visitors to show identity cards.

“If there is no clear need, then the identity, I’m sorry, there is guard there, right?” said Ikhsan.

Previously Kapolda Metro Jaya Inspector General Karyoto confirmed that the shooter at the central MUI office used an airsoft gun. These weapons are not classified as firearms.

“There are pellets filled with bullets, there are also small gas canisters, which are called airsoft guns, not firearms,” ​​said Karyoto in his statement to journalists at the central MUI office, Jl Proklamasi, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (2/5).

The shooting incident occurred at 11:24 WIB. The shooter is male. He entered the MUI building but was detained by internal security (pamdal). There was the shooting.

“For details, we will ask the labfor,” said Karyoto.

After the shooting, the perpetrator was chased by the MUI office security. The suspect then fainted while being detained.

Officers then took the perpetrator who fainted to the nearest health center. Some time later, the perpetrator was declared dead.
