The wreckage of the missing Indonesian submarine off the island of Bali has been found. The ship appears to have been broken into three pieces. All 53 crew members have died, the Indonesian authorities report on Sunday.
The chance of survivors seemed to have been lost on Saturday, after the search for the submarine had found wreckage of the vessel. The submarine itself was located at a depth of about 850 meters in the water, when it was actually built to only dive to 500 meters. That indicated that the boat had sunk.
The 44-year-old KRI Nanggala-402 disappeared from the radar on Wednesday, about 95 kilometers off the coast of Bali. That happened during a torpedo drill. In the search for the crew, Indonesia received help from other countries, including Australia and the United States.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has expressed his condolences to the relatives of the crew. “All Indonesians express their deep sorrow at this tragedy, especially towards the families of the crew,” he said.
