Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian smartphone market continues to decline for eight consecutive quarters. A report by research firm IDC shows HP’s shipments plunged 6.3% in Q2 2023 on a year-over-year (YoY) basis.
There were 8.9 million HP units shipped in the last three months. Even though it decreased from the previous year, this figure grew 13.8% compared to the previous quarter (QoQ).
Samsung is listed as the HP king in Indonesia for the IDC version of Q2 2023. The South Korean manufacturer sold 1.9 million units of HP with a market share of 20.8%. This achievement still recorded growth of minus 3.4% YoY.

In second place is Oppo, which sold 1.6 million units of cellphone and earned a market share of 17.6%. The Chinese manufacturer fell 19.8% YoY.
This figure is somewhat different from the Counterpoint report which recorded Oppo as the HP king in Indonesia in Q2 2023 and Samsung in second place.
IDC notes that the low-cost HP segment (entry level) is a supporter of growth which is still stagnating. The market share for 4G mobile phones rose to 86% from the previous 82%.
Meanwhile, the HP 5G market share, which is mostly in the premium price range, fell 4.3%. This decrease is the first since the 5G network was introduced in RI in 2020.
“Adoption of HP 5G is slowing due to bottlenecks on the demand and supply sides. The market share for 5G devices is still very small compared to 4G cellphones. Even though the price of HP 5G is now cheaper, HP 4G offers similar specifications at a more affordable price,” said Associate Market Analyst IDC Indonesia, Vanessa Aurelia, Tuesday (5/9/2023), quoted from the official IDC website.
Furthermore, Vanessa said the 5G network was still limited in several areas. In addition, the features offered by the 5G network are unable to attract public interest.
“The slow penetration of 5G cellphones has made telco companies cautious about investing in the network,” Vanessa said.
