Indonesian police have arrested a village shaman, Slamet Tohari, on suspicion of premeditated murder after at least a dozen bodies were found buried in his garden. Tohari reportedly promised to multiply money for his clients using magic, but then poisoned them when they wanted their cash back. Police believe he may have been killing his victims since 2020 by luring them to his house for a ritual and then feeding them drinks laced with potassium cyanide and sedatives. Tohari, who faces the death penalty, was previously jailed in 2019 for counterfeit money crimes. Experts suggest that such money multiplying scams are common in Indonesia, where belief in the occult is widespread, and more education is needed to combat them.
