Indonesian National team made it through to the knockout round Asian Cup for the first time. This is proof PSSI didn’t make a mistake Shin Tae-yong as a coach.
Indonesia slipped through the eye of the needle to enter the four best third-place teams 2023 Asian Cup. Indonesia with three points finished fourth behind Jordan, Palestine and Syria.
The draw between Kyrgyzstan vs Oman helped Indonesia qualify even though they only got three points, one win and two defeats. For Indonesia, qualifying from the group phase is the best achievement during the Asian Cup.

Even though he is often criticized for his choice of tactics and players, Shin has proven otherwise. Indonesia, with all its handicaps, was able to bring Shin to progress this far.
In this case, PSSI considered it appropriate to bring in Shin, who was slowly starting to change the mindset and playing style of Indonesian footballers. Shin himself was brought in at the beginning of Mochamad Iriawan’s leadership era in 2020.
“The Indonesian National Team’s success in qualifying for the Top 16 for the first time at the 2023 Qatar Asian Cup was not achieved instantly but through a process. However, Iwan Bule had a role,” said football observer Rayana Djakasurya in a press statement.
“Iwan Bule was smart enough to recruit Shin Tae-yong, whose reputation is quite good. And, I know exactly that it was not easy to get Shin Tae-yong, who successfully led South Korea to beat Germany in the 2018 World Cup. That proves that his choice was right at that time,” he continued.
Iriawan was praised for being able to accept input and criticism when leading PSSI, especially regarding the selection of Shin as coach of the Indonesian National Team.
At that time, I criticized PSSI the harshest. “And, I applaud Iwan Bule, who previously did not understand football matters, for accepting my proposal to completely hand over the management of the Indonesian National Team to Shin Tae-yong,” he explained.
The Indonesian national team will face Oceania giant Australia in the Round of 16, Sunday (28/1/2024) evening WIB. Can Indonesia repeat its performance against Japan and create a surprise?
“The Indonesian National Team’s game is progressing. This can be seen from their ability to attack. It is not easy to break through the Japanese goal, which is a world team,” he explained.
