Surabaya, SapaNusa.- The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) declared polio outbreak status (extraordinary event) after in December 2023, three children in Central Java and East Java were reported to have experienced acute paralysis due to the type 2 polio virus.
Airlangga University Child Disease Expert (Airlangga University), Dr. Dominicus Husada also spoke. He also commented on the polio outbreak.
According to him, over the last two years, polio cases have spread in various regions.

According to Dr. Dominicus, this spread is the result of a decrease in immunization during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“During the pandemic, our immunization decreased sharply,” he said, quoted by SapaNusa.id, Sunday (21/1).
The Head of the Children’s Infectious and Tropical Diseases Division, Department of Child Health, FK Unair, said that if immunization stops, the disease will come back.
Therefore, reducing and stopping immunization has an impact on the emergence of diseases that are classified as diseases that can be prevented by immunization (PD3I).
“This is when we reap the effects. “Almost all PD3I will increase sharply in 2022-2023,” he explained.
Dr. Dominicus explained that polio has received special supervision globally. The world health organization, WHO, has established international procedures for dealing with polio.
“The status of polio has become an outbreak. “The handling is controlled by WHO, there are international procedures, there are days to count,” he said.
