Indonesian Minister Responds to Rohingya Refugee Issue: Victims of Mafia Syndicate

Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly responded to the question Rohingya refugees which entered Indonesian territory. Yasonna said that basically these Rohingya refugees were victims of the mafia.

“Indeed, this is a syndicate, they have been arrested, but what we also hope is that we will be able to avoid this in the future because they are also victims of the mafias who brought them,” said Yasonna to journalists at an event commemorating World Human Rights Day, Banteng Field, Central Jakarta, Sunday (10/12/2023).

He said that up to now Indonesia has played a big role in helping refugee victims. He touched on the issue of refugees in Indonesia not only from the Rohingya.

“But I think Indonesia has done quite a lot of good things in accommodating refugees. We now have 15 thousand, almost 13 thousand more refugees, Afghans, Iranians, most recently Rohingya,” said Yasonna.

Yasonna said Rohingya refugees This is also a victim because he sold his property and objects to get to Indonesia. Yasonna said the government would find a solution to the Rohingya refugee problem together with UNHCR.

“In Medan, some time ago someone set themselves on fire so that regional heads no longer wanted to accept them,” said Yasonna.

“However, we hope that the regional government and central government will also (take action) and of course UNHCR will work together with us to find the right solution for this,” he added.

President Jokowi previously said he had received reports about Rohingya refugees in Indonesia. Jokowi said there were allegations of involvement in the TPPO network.

“I got a report about Rohingya refugees More and more of them are entering Indonesian territory, especially the province of Aceh. “There are strong suspicions that there is involvement of the Criminal Trafficking in Persons (TPPO) network in this flow of refugees,” said Jokowi, Friday (8/12).

Jokowi stated that the Indonesian government would take firm action against TIP perpetrators. In addition, humanitarian assistance to refugees will be provided while still taking into account the interests of local communities.

“The Indonesian government will take firm action against TIP perpetrators and temporary humanitarian assistance to refugees will be provided by prioritizing the interests of local communities,” said Jokowi.
