Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
One of the Indonesian men’s doubles pairs Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon withdrew from the 2023 Indonesia Open tournament which will start on Tuesday (13/6).
Kevin/Marcus were previously registered as athletes who would compete in the men’s doubles sector. In the first round draw, Kevin/Marcus is set to meet seventh-seeded Indian doubles Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty.
In a release issued by PBSI on social media, the couple nicknamed Minions is said to have withdrawn due to injury. Apart from Kevin/Marcus, Shesar Hiren Rhustavito also withdrew due to injury.
Without Kevin/Marcus, five Indonesian men’s doubles will compete at the 2023 Indonesia Open, namely Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan, Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, and Pramudya Kusumawardana/ Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan.
Kevin/Marcus, who were once ranked 1st in the world, had to be willing to go down in the rankings because they did not appear in international tournaments several times. Injuries and illness suffered by one of the players caused Kevin/Marcus not to appear.
An abdominal muscle injury forced Marcus to undergo surgery and recovery which made one of Indonesia’s mainstays no longer routinely present titles in recent times.
In their last match, at the Singapore Open 2023, Kevin/Marcus stopped in the second round after losing to Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi. The defeat to Hoki/Kobayashi in the second round was also felt by Kevin/Marcus at the 2023 Malaysia Masters.
Meanwhile, at the 2023 Thailand Open, Kevin/Marcus reached the semifinals.
Kevin/Marcus are currently ranked 16th in the world. In terms of ranking, Kevin/Marcus is below the other four Indonesian men’s doubles, namely Fajar/Rian, Hendra/Ahsan, Leo/Daniel, and Fikri/Bagas.
