A study published recently in the journal Urology Case Reports reports that an Indonesian man from West Nusa Tenggara had to undergo emergency surgery after breaking his penis while engaging in dangerous sex positions.
The unnamed 37-year-old man had intercourse in the cowgirl position, where the woman is on top facing away from her partner.
The man suddenly heard a loud cracking sound during sex, followed by pain, discomfort and sudden loss of erection. In this condition, the patient starts bleeding from the tip of his penis and cannot urinate.
This man was rushed to the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial General Hospital. Arriving at the scene, his penis had swollen and turned dark purple, in medical language it is referred to as “eggplant deformity”.
During examination, the patient was found to have a wide and deep fracture of the penis and the tissue of his penis was also ruptured.
The penis is technically boneless. However, when the penis is broken, it means that there is a tear in the tunica albuginea, or the tissue that allows the penis to enlarge and get erect.
According to Dr Karan Raj, the condition of the broken penis in this case was caused by a sex position which is known to be “the most dangerous in the world”. Sex positions that men do also account for 50 percent of penile fractures in the world.
Emergency surgery was performed to repair the patient’s fractured penis, after which the urethra was sutured and the wound on the penis was bandaged.
