Indonesian earthquake deaths increase to 40 people | Voice of America

The number of deaths from the 6.2 earthquake on the 15th in western Sulawesi Island in Indonesia has increased to at least 42. There are reports that many people are still lying in the rubble of a collapsed building, and the damage is expected to increase further.

Indonesian disaster authorities announced that as of the 16th, there were 34 deaths in Mamuju, 8 in Magenee, and a total of 42 deaths. About 600 injured people were also identified, and about 15,000 were displaced.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake that day occurred 22mi (about 35.4km) south of Mamuju, the western city of Sulawesi, at 2:28am local time.

Houses, hospitals, hotels, and offices in both Mamuju and Magenee areas near the epicenter collapsed one after another.

A video of people groaning under a pile of buildings was uploaded on the Internet social network. In a video released by the Indonesian disaster authorities, a girl caught in the rubble of a collapsed house shouted “Help”.

While the Indonesian government dispatched rescue equipment, manpower, and aid to the area, search and rescue personnel from various fields flocked.
