Indonesia’s Cinta Quran Foundation Breaks Ground on As-Sholihin Mosque in Yokohama, Japan
On Friday, January 10, 2025, a historic milestone was achieved as the As-Sholihin Mosque in Yokohama,Japan,officially began construction. Spearheaded by the Cinta Quran Foundation,this project marks the first Indonesian-lead mosque in the region,designed to serve as both a spiritual and social hub for the growing Muslim community.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Fatih Karim, founder and advisory board member of the Cinta Quran Foundation, alongside key figures such as Muhammad Al Aula, Coordinator of the Facts and Socio-Cultural Function of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, and renowned Japanese architect Masamitsu Iibe. The event also saw the presence of Dr. Aisah Dahlan, a neuroparenting expert, and Putri Ariani, a Top 4 finalist on America’s Got Talent 2023.
A Modern Spiritual Center
The As-Sholihin Mosque will span 650 square meters on a 397-square-meter plot, accommodating over 600 worshippers. Designed with a modern aesthetic,the three-story structure will feature a prayer hall,a muallaf (converts) center,a Bayt al-mal (community welfare fund),a halal market,and spaces for Islamic studies and social activities.
Fatih Karim emphasized the mosque’s multifunctional role,stating,“The As-Sholihin Yokohama Mosque is a true form of the mission of Islamic Da’wah full of love in the Land of the Rising Sun. we hope this mosque will not only be a place of worship but also be a center for social activities, which will strengthen intercultural community relations in Japan.”
A Beacon of Hope
The mosque’s construction has already made an impact, with several Japanese citizens embracing Islam at the site. “Alhamdulillah, with Allah’s guidance, many Japanese citizens have finaly embraced Islam at the place where this mosque will be built. Hopefully, more people will flock here to declare their faith,” Karim shared.
Muhammad Al Aula highlighted the growing Indonesian population in Japan, now at 173,000, and the mosque’s meaning beyond the Muslim community.“We hope that the As-Sholihin Mosque will be a beacon of hope for the goodness of humanity on earth. This mosque is in the middle of the Japanese community who may not be Muslims, but this should not become a barrier that limits, because Islam was revealed as a blessing for all humanity,” he said.
Community support and Funding
The project, estimated to cost Rp40 billion, has garnered widespread support from Muslims in Indonesia through donations. The mosque’s design, crafted in collaboration with Japanese architects, ensures it meets local building standards while providing a comfortable space for worship.
