Young badminton player Alwi Farhan make history in 2023 World Junior Championships. This status was obtained after this player from Surakarta became the first Indonesian men’s singles player to register as champion.

Alwi appeared in the final round which took place at The Podium Arena, Spokane, Washington, USA, Sunday (8/10/2023) local time.

He was the fourth seed but was able to play well even though he was behind several points when he faced the third seed, Hu Zhe An (China). Alwi finished the match with a score of 21-19, 19-21, 21-14 in 65 minutes.

Alwi confirmed himself as the winner and ended his long-standing thirst and became the first Indonesian men’s singles representative as champion of the Junior World Championships since this event was officially held by the BWF in 1992.

“Thank God and I’m grateful that I was able to win. I didn’t expect to get here. Because last year I knew how hard the struggle was to appear at WJC,” said Alwi in a PBSI statement, Monday (9/10/2023).

“This victory cannot be separated from the support and prayers of my parents, family, coaches, colleagues and team support so that I can finally become the champion I am today,” he said.

“The key to victory was that I appeared more confident. Appearing in the final wasn’t just about skill, but also mental, focus and thinking. I was able to win thanks to being superior mentally and mentally,” said Alwi.

“Thank you to the Indonesian people who have supported and prayed for me to emerge as world junior champion. Thank you also to my parents, family, coaches, colleagues, seniors at national training, as well as to PBSI and the Exist club who have coached me since I was little. Alwi said.

Apart from Alwi, Indonesia also sent Chiara Marvella Handoyo to the final. However, he lost to Pitchamon Opatniputh from Thailand with a score of 11-21, 9-21 in 33 minutes.

With this result, Chiara failed to follow in the footsteps of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung as the last Indonesian women’s singles player to become world junior champion in 2017 in Yogyakarta.
