PARIS, WEDNESDAY — Hearing about a series of defeats by Indonesian badminton athletes in the early rounds of tournaments has become commonplace in the last year. This time, seven of the 13 representatives were eliminated in the first round of the French Open.

Defeats in the two days of the first round at the Adidas Arena, Paris, 5-6 March 2024, were experienced by the defending men’s singles champions, Jonatan Christie, Meilysa Trias Puspitasari/Rachel Alessya Rose, and Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan.

Those who must get as many ranking points as possible to get tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics are also among those eliminated. Two men’s doubles, Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana, even lost two games. Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati could not survive against the second seed in the French Open mixed doubles, Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino. In the match at the Adidas Arena, Paris, Wednesday (6/3/2024), Rehan/Lisa lost 21-14, 15-21, 14-21.

At that time, the French Open was held at the Glaz Arena, Rennes, about 300 kilometers west of Paris. The 2024 event was chosen at the Adidas Arena so that athletes can adapt to the venue that will be used for badminton competition at the Olympics on July 26-August 11 2024.

Two mixed doubles who were chasing the opportunity to qualify for Paris 2024 also experienced defeats at important moments, namely Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari and Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati. This number is even threatened with not having a representative at the Olympics because there are no players in the qualifying zone.

Dejan/Gloria have the opportunity to add points because they qualified for the second round after winning a walkover (WO) over the German pair, Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Lohau, in the first round. They must prepare to face their opponents in the second round, namely Jiang Zen Bang/Wei Ya Xin, the Chinese pair who won the last two of their three meetings.

From the overall results in the first round, Indonesia only has six representatives who will compete in the second round, Thursday (7/3/2024). In the men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting will face Loh Kean Yew. Meanwhile, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo will face Su Li Yang after eliminating sixth seed, Kodai Naraoka, in the first round.
