Indonesiabaik.id: Implementing Wolbachia Technology to Eliminate Dengue Fever by 2030

Indonesiabaik.id – Wolbachia is a natural bacteria in 50% of insects and acts as a symbiont (without negative impacts). The aim of implementing Wolbachia in Indonesia is to treat dengue fever, and this is Indonesia’s commitment to achieving zero deaths from dengue fever by 2030.

Wolbachia technology is implemented by the “Replacement” method. So, male and female mosquitoes containing Wolbachia are released into natural populations to mate with local mosquitoes and produce offspring containing Wolbachia.

This makes the mosquito no longer able to transmit the dengue virus. The spread of Wolbachia mosquitoes has been carried out in several cities in Indonesia, including Semarang, Bandung, West Jakarta, Kupang and Bontang.

Previously, this program had been successfully implemented in Yogyakarta in 2016 and had brought about a significant reduction in dengue cases. In 2016, the number of dengue fever cases in Yogyakarta reached 1,700, but in 2023, there were only 67 cases recorded. This program is considered successful by the Yogyakarta City Government in dealing with the spread of dengue fever.
