The Garuda squad was slaughtered by Australia by four goals without reply in the match which took place at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Rayyan, Sunday 28 January 2024.
The Indonesian national team actually dominated the game and controlled the ball. However, Ernando Ari’s goal was broken twice in the first half, respectively through Elkan Baggott’s suicide and Martin Boyle’s header.

In the second half, Indonesia failed to reduce the deficit. On the other hand, it was Australia who were able to increase their lead thanks to goals from Craig Goodwin and Harry Souttar.
This defeat meant that the Indonesian national team had to leave their suitcases from the Asian Cup. Also, Indonesia was the first team to be eliminated in this tournament.

Responding to this defeat, Indra Sjafri continued to provide support to the Indonesian national team coach, Shin Tae-yong. He expressed his gratitude for Shin Tae-yong’s struggle as well as the players and official staff.
“Thank you coach Shin Tae-yong, staff and players who have tried to do their best for Indonesian football,” wrote Indra Sjafri on his social media.
Meanwhile, Shin Tae-yong admitted that the reason his team failed to beat Australia was because the players lacked experience. Even though the team’s performance was optimal, experience was the difference in this match.
“We didn’t lose in terms of performance, they played well and carried out my instructions well,” said Shin Tae-yong.
“But it is true that the element of experience is still needed by our players,” added the coach from South Korea.
