Indonesia has divided the western part of the island of New Guinea into two provinces, Papua and West Papua. But the independence movement sees the provinces as one area and has been fighting for independence for decades, since Indonesia took over the authority of the Netherlands.
They do not recognize the referendum that was under the banner of the United Nations in 1969 kept and the outcome was that the indigenous population wanted to join Indonesia. Only 1025 selected residents were allowed to participate and they were also pressured to vote for affiliation with Indonesia.
