Meteorologists have issued a tsunami warning to surrounding islands, including Maluk and Sulawesi.
The Indonesian service also reports that a repeat 5.6 magnitude seismic strike hit the city of Larantuku.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3.
The American Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that huge waves caused by the earthquake were observed on islands 1000 km from the shock site.
