Indonesia Ranks Second for Most Tuberculosis Cases, Target of Reduction by 2050

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Indonesia is ranked second as the country with the most cases of tuberculosis or (TB).

This was conveyed by pulmonary specialist Erlina Burhan in her inauguration as Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), Saturday, February 17 2024.

“There is a tragedy before our eyes that we are not aware of. 1,060,000 cases (TB) per year. “140,700 deaths, if we divide it, 16 people per hour die due to tuberculosis,” said Erlina when met at FKUI, Central Jakarta.

He added that Indonesia is currently pursuing a TB reduction target. The TB elimination target by 2050 is one case per 1,000,000 population.

“In 2050, Indonesia’s population is predicted to be 320 million. “If in 2050 there are 320 million people, then there can only be around 320 TB people living in Indonesia, because that is the elimination target.”

“This is homework for all parties,” continued Erlina. Collaboration and cooperation is needed because this is not only a problem for people in the health sector but TB triggers more non-health problems.

“From now on it must be structured and massive (TB handling) because in Indonesia each party tends to work independently. Some work on diagnosis, some work on therapy, not orchestrated. So, everything should be put together in such a way that it is harmonious and directed.”
