India wins Thomas Cup 2022 after beating Indonesia 3-0 in the final match which took place at Impact Arena, Bangkok, Sunday (15/5).
India became the champion after Srikanth Kidambi beat Jonatan Christie in two straight games 21-15 and 23-21 in the third match.
Jonathan seemed to be playing less comfortable in the first game. Was left far behind on two occasions in positions 2-8 and 11-15. Although later able to equalize twice 8-8 and 15-15, Jojo finally lost 15-21 in the first game.
In the second game, Kidambi who only needed one game to bring India to become the Thomas Cup champion for the first time played quite impressively.
Interestingly, Jonathan, who was aware that Indonesia needed a win to prevent India from winning, also showed his best game. A tight duel ensued throughout the second game.
Kidambi had a comfortable 12-8 advantage over Jonathan in the second game. But Jonathan played superbly to match the Indian men’s singles game, which turned 18-15 ahead.
Having won several times, Jojo finally failed to stop India from winning the 2022 Thomas Cup after losing 23-21 in the second game.
In the first two matches, two Indonesian representatives, Anthony Ginting and the men’s doubles, Mohammad Ahsan/Kevin Sanjaya, also lost.
This result made Indonesia failed to defend the Thomas Cup title.
