Indonesia Introduces Jakarta-Surabaya Fast Train: All You Need to Know

Jakarta

Indonesia officially became the first country in Southeast Asia to operate a fast train after the launch of the Jakarta-Bandung Whoosh Fast Train earlier this month. It doesn’t stop there, currently the government is also reviewing the development of a fast train project to Surabaya.

In the future, the Jakarta-Surabaya fast train will use a domestically made product called Merah Putih which was developed by INKA and other agencies such as BRIN, LPDP, ITS, UGM and ITB. So what is the difference between this fast train made in Indonesia and the Whoosh fast train which is already operating?

Senior Manager for Public Relations and Representative Office of PT INKA (Persero), Agung Dwi Cahyono, said that the main difference between the domestically made fast train and Whoosh which is currently operating is the speed of the train when passing. In contrast to Whoosh which can travel up to 350 km/hour, the Red and White Fast Train will be able to travel a maximum of 250 km/hour.

“If the Whoosh is already operating, yes, the Whoosh has a speed of up to 350 km/hour. So, from the program we have set, we can at most go above 230 to 250 km/hour,” explained Agung to detikcomTuesday (10/10/2023).

Regarding the differences in other specifications, Agung could not explain further because this fast train was developed together with other agencies, where the prototype plan will only be launched in 2026.

However, Agung confirmed that with the existence of the Red and White Fast Train, the travel time from Jakarta to Surabaya will be shorter. With an average speed of more than 200 km/hour, the travel time between these two cities is estimated to be only 4 hours 40 minutes.

“It is said that the speed of the fast train must be above 200 km/hour, so assuming the distance between Jakarta and Surabaya is 750 km, the journey will take at least 3 hours 40 minutes,” he said.

Even so, he feels that the government also needs to prepare new infrastructure, especially for rail crossings where high-speed trains will pass in the future. Because this fast train is designed to cross the same wide rail as the Jakarta Bandung Whoosh Fast Train

“Generally, with that kind of speed, the rail width must be between 1,435 millimeters to 1,667 millimeters, right? So now (the width of the train tracks) is 1,067 millimeters, so that’s not possible. Yes, you must use new rails, with new rails. “It’s wide. It’s owned by the same people in Woosh, it’s also there in Aceh, it’s also there in Makassar,” said Agung again.
