INDONESIA – FOOTBALL: Indonesian football is looking for a new boss

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is looking for a new leader at its Extraordinary Congress (KLB) on February 16.

Five candidates are in the running, while calls for radical reforms are launched against this federation in difficulty. Faced with widespread criticism over the mishandling of last October’s deadly tragedy at Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java, the PSSI is struggling to turn the page after repeated failures on the international stage and years of entrenched clientelism that has hampered the growth of a sport followed religiously by a large majority of Indonesians.

A new figure at the helm of the association could offer it a chance for a fresh start, and a host of politically connected people are vying for the next race.

20 people will be candidates for the position of vice-president and 83 people will be candidates for the position of member of the executive committee

Indonesian football is reputed to be one of the most corrupt in the world.
