The Indonesian government strongly condemns the burning of the courtyards Al-Qur’an outside one of the mosques in Sweden. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) emphasized that the action hurt the feelings of Muslims.
“Indonesia strongly condemns the provocative act of burning the Koran by a Swedish citizen in front of the Great Mosque of Södermalm, Stockholm during Eid al-Adha,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote via its official Twitter account, Thursday (29/6/2023).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the burning of the Koran cannot be justified. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that freedom of expression must respect the values and beliefs of other religions.
“This action really hurts the feelings of Muslims and cannot be justified. Freedom of expression must also respect the values and beliefs of other religions,” explained the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Indonesia and the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) member countries in Sweden have protested this incident,” he added.
Earlier, a man burned pages of the Koran outside the main mosque in Stockholm, Sweden on Wednesday. Police have investigated the man.
Reported by AFP, Thursday (29/6), police Sweden said it was investigating the man. Police judged the man to be incitement “against an ethnic group.”
The action was also condemned by Turkey. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned it as “reprehensible”.
“It is unacceptable to allow these anti-Islamic acts under the pretext of freedom of expression. Turning a blind eye to such horrific acts means complicity,” Fidan said on Twitter.
