Indonesia has completed the first round of negotiations for a free-trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as it seeks to expand its exports to non-traditional markets in the region. With a population of 183 million and a GDP of $2.04tn, the EAEU provides an opportunity for Indonesia to promote its products in central Asia and eastern Europe, said Johni Martha, the Director of Bilateral Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade. Eleven working groups are involved in the talks, addressing areas including customs procedures, trade safeguards and intellectual property. The finalization of negotiations is hoped for by 2024.
