Indonesia stops selling cough medicines from India. The reason is the death of 99 children, who would have died after drinking a cough syrup from the Asian country.
Indonesian health services are currently investigating the deaths of 99 children from acute kidney failure. It could have been because of the cough syrup.
The same thing happened in Gambia earlier this month. The deaths were linked to a drug from Indian manufacturer Maiden Pharmaceuticals.
According to authorities, no cough syrups from Maiden Pharmaceuticals have been sold in Indonesia. However, there were over-the-counter medications that could contain too high a dose of the same substances. This applies in particular to the substances diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.
To be safe, Indonesia has temporarily banned the sale of all cough medicines from India. The WHO World Organization warned of the drug earlier this month.
