Nordic Combined World Championships: Individual competition on the large hill NOW in the live ticker

Vid Vrhovnik (SLO)

Vid Vrhovnik was considered to be the great talent of the Slovenian team, but had never made it to the top of the world. After 115 meters, he cannot put his stamp on the competition even today and has to line up behind athletes he could actually have under control.

Otto Niittykoski (FIN)

The young athlete from the Finnish team can also unpack a good jump in the competition and, with 116.5 meters, puts himself in a good position for him personally. The grades were similar to Loomis’, but he received fewer deductions for the wind and so he took second place.

Ben Loomis (USA)

The jump is not going optimally for Ben Loomis and there is still room for improvement. Due to the nice updraft, however, the US boy can still fly and with 117 meters makes the second-best jump of the passage so far.

Vyacheslav Bochkarev (KAZ)

Vyacheslav Bochkarev is the last athlete from the Kazakh team to go over the hill. But it doesn’t go far with him either. 76 meters throw him back to the end of the list of results.

Gael Blondeau (FRA)

Gael Blondeau can make better use of the wind conditions and for him it goes down to 114.5 meters when there is an updraft. The grades are only in the 16 range and so it remains well behind the current leader.

Eldar Orussayev (KAZ)

Eldar Orussayev had a little more updraft again, but he can’t use it for his purposes and with 77.5 meters, the inexperienced Kazakhs have to put themselves at the bottom of the field.

Oleksandr Shumbarets (UKR)

There are still no jumps in the high width area and only Brecl was able to jump over the K-point. Even Oleksandr Shumbarets does not succeed in making an attempt that should also satisfy him personally. He could have been more than 89 meters.

Je-un Park (KOR)

Je-un Park is always there internationally and the progress is clearly noticeable with the Korean. But for the very front it is not enough and he has to make his landing early at 99 meters.

Lukas Danek (JUN)

Lukas Danek had big plans for this season, but was then thrown back by a corona infection. After 100.5 meters he shrugs his shoulders in disappointment and leaves the run with his head bowed.

Eduard Zhirnov (RUS)

The youngster from the Russian team can’t do much more either. He’s a bit late at the take-off table, then can’t set up his system properly and doesn’t even beat 90 meters.

Viacheslav Barkov (RUS)

Viacheslav Barkov also finds it really difficult to do something with a tailwind from this infeed hatch. After 92 meters, the wind compensation points don’t help much and he’s already four minutes behind Brecl, whose race to catch up is continuing.

Magzhan Amankeldiuly (KAZ)

Magzhan Amankeldiuly now has twice the difficulty. The only 17-year-old has only eight international competitions on his account and now he is also facing a slight tailwind. After 78.5 meters he has to be in the penultimate position.

Jasper Good (USA)

Jasper Good can’t get involved either. The American missed the timing at the take-off table and was therefore unable to take the speed into his jump. At 93 meters, he is one of those who cannot jump the 100 meters.

Vitaliy Hrebeniuk (UKR)

After Brecl’s broad sentence, it is now shorter. The athletes from the smaller nations simply do not have the opportunity to frequently jump on large facilities during training. These uncertainties keep showing up. The young Ukrainian finishes after 79 meters.

Andreas Ilves (EST)

Andreas Ilves cannot yet get close to his brother on the hill, who will later be considered for long jumps. For him it will be 88.5 meters, which puts him far behind the current leader.

Dmytro Mazurchuk (UKR)

Dmytro Mazurchuk is also struggling to reach the great distance of the Slovenian competitor. His skis are far apart so that he does not create a large air cushion. After 103 meters there are already three minutes missing.

Chingiz Rakparov (KAZ)

Chingiz Rakparov first has to wait until the wind is outside the corridor set before the competition. Since the updraft remains stable, there is finally a gate down, which can then also change the corridor. At 88 meters, however, he can only use it to a limited extent.

Gasper Brecl (SLO)

But now it could go far! Gasper Brecl from the first group was in a really good mood in the previous rounds and now the young man from Slovenia is even catching an upswing. What can he do with it? A lot! He gets away from the take-off on time, makes the connection to the ski smoothly and sails down to 132 meters. This gives him the opportunity, at least after jumping, to be way ahead.

Andrzej Szczechowicz (POL)

Andrzej Szczechowicz has a lot to do in the air, has to repeatedly intervene with his arms and fails to keep his system stable during the flight. With 108.5 meters he still overtakes Shumate.

Samir Mastiev (RUS)

Samir Mastiev doesn’t really get into his jump, stands very upright over his skis and so his speed is slowed down early on. After 86 meters, he goes back to the end of the field.

Jared Shumate (USA)

Jared Shumate is clearly on top of the previous attempts and can bring his jump up to 103.5 meters. This width is currently enough for first place, but will certainly not give him a good starting position today.

Alexander the Great (RUS)

Aleksandr Milanin from Russia is the next starter and goes on the track. The 20-year-old has a lot to do in the air and has a very open system. 92 meters, it won’t be more for him either.

Viktor Pasichnyk (UKR)

It is served and the Ukrainian is the first of a total of 52 athletes to cross the bakken. For him, the jump ends at 86.5 meters. The first slightly further jump can be expected with starter number six with the Slovenian Gasper Brecl.

This is how the trial run went

Before the jump, the athletes had to go over the hill in a trial run. After this started with a lot of tailwind, some athletes in the top ten even encountered updrafts later. For the first time in a jump, Jarl Magnus Riiber showed the best jump with 131.5 meters. Johannes Lamparter had jumped with 133.5 meters, but had a slight updraft during his jump. Akito Watabe was third ahead of Ryota Yamamoto. Manuel Faißt finished fifth ahead of team mate Eric Frenzel.

Italy not at the start

Last week, the ski jumpers from Italy had to retreat completely after a positive corona test, yesterday the Italian Winter Sports Association took even more drastic measures in the support team after further positive corona cases and withdrew the entire team. This also affects the combiners around Alessandro Pittin. But no one from their squad was one of the favorites.

Who else do you need to watch out for?

In addition to Jarl Magnus Riiber, who never found himself in first place in the training sessions, it is also important to pay attention to Oftebro from the Norwegian team. He was able to take a medal from the normal hill in the individual and presented stable jumps from the large facility. If a good jump on the hill succeeds, Ilkka Herola always has to be counted as one of the favorites, especially since he has proven from the normal hill that he is able to run larger backlogs. The Japanese Akito Watabe would also like to get involved. His compatriot Yamamoto is one of the favorites on the hill, but should not be able to keep up with the best in cross-country skiing.

ÖSV team is lurking

The Austrians should not be underestimated in the battle for medals. Johannes Lamparter in particular showed some of the best jumps in training and has proven over the winter that he can also keep up on the cross-country ski run. Lukas Greiderer should also go into today’s competition with a lot of self-confidence. In addition to them, Mario Seidl and Lukas Klapfer received one of the starting places for the individual decision.

Five German starters

Since Germany has the 2019 world champion in its ranks in Eric Frenzel, the team can send five athletes to the start today. In addition to Eric Frenzel in the fight for the medals, it is also Fabian Rießle who could show good jumps in the training sessions. If Vinzenz Geiger jumps in at the front, everything is possible for him too. Johannes Rydzek was also able to convince with good training attempts on the large hill, but recently showed weaknesses in the cross-country ski run. The team is completed by Manuel Faißt, for whom it will be the first appearance at the World Cup.

Will Norway win again?

So far, the Norwegians have cleared everything in the Nordic Combined World Championships. At the beginning, single gold from the normal hill went to Jarl Magnus Riiber, shortly afterwards Gyda Westvold Hansen secured the first World Championship gold in the women ahead of the Leinan Lund sisters. After a strong performance in cross-country skiing, Norway triumphed in the team ahead of Germany and Austria. This means that the Norwegians around Jarl Magnus Riiber are still among the favorites today.

Before start:

Hello and welcome. Jumping starts today at 11 a.m., and cross-country skiing starts at 3 p.m.
