Indihome Gideon Badminton Academy: Building a Young Club with Big Ambitions

Marcus Fernaldi Gideon have a badminton club that is still quite young. Although still small, big and high ambitions proclaimed.

The club is named Indihome Gideon Badminton Academy. The club was built by Marcus and his father, Kurniahu Gideon, in 2021. He is not even three years old as of August 2023.

At the BNI Sirnas A Banten 2023 event, IGBA players were able to compete. Watched live by Koh Kur, as Kurniahu is known, his best achievement was being able to reach the last eight in one of the events contested.

Koh Kur told a story on the sidelines of BNI Sirnas A Banten 2023 about the IGBA club. He admits that at first it was just a fad.

“We gave the name Indihome Gideon Badminton Academy. We will be established in 2021, October 1. We are still sponsored, including by (Marcus) Gideon, the athlete as well. Because we still need a lot of money, yes, if it’s hard alone,” he said, laughing, to detikSport

“So after I retired from the Tangkas club, I thought there was land here in Cibubur. Can I build a field, maybe I think, for a small club. Then I said to Gideon, my son, ‘do you want to build it or not?”

“If you want to build it, only for small clubs, so that later they can subsidize the national training center. If that can’t be done, we’ll still help get the players to get to the national training center. In the end he wants to, he meets here and there, looks for sponsors, now he’s finally done a little big. Start making the first auditions, looking for players, that’s how it is,” he said.

The IGBA, according to Koh Kur, targets to send players to the PBSI national team when they are four years old. He wants his success to polish many players at his previous club, to happen at his own club.

“Yes, we are still 2.5 years old now, not yet three years old. My goal is to be able to send subsidies to the national team for four years. If not two, then one. If possible, two,” he said.

“Like I used to be at the Tangkas club, there used to be a lot of subsidies to the national team. There were Rexy, Nova, Ardiansyah, Christian Hadinata, including Simon Santoso, who has now coached at Jaya Raya, then there is Jonatan Christie, we have a lot of subsidies for the national. Including my own son, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.”

“Instead of being unemployed, it’s better for me to work for Indonesia, so that the badminton generation continues. Even though the subsidy is small, maybe it’s only one athlete, but we’re trying give,” he said.

Marcus Gideon is definitely an icon of the IGBA. Together with Kevin Sanjaya, Sinyo, Marcus’s nickname, was able to win many titles and topped the world rankings.

“I hope to create players like Fajar Alfian, Marcus, Kevin. If possible, it’s like Jonathan Christie. If possible, like Axelsen, if there are seeds. I think my ambition is there too, but it all depends on the ingredients, depending on the quality. athletes,” he said.

“Now our athletes can be said to be still ‘leftovers’ from the big clubs. We are a small club, just starting. I think if we can subsidize one, for the national level, that’s good enough,”

“Yes, so far I’m very grateful. We were able to reach the top eight Sirnas A, Sirnas B. We once won first place at Sirnas B at an early age, at double third winner. We are grateful that this newly founded club has already won, which means it’s extraordinary. Yes, the target is four years, we can send players to the National Training Center. That means there is a system that works, counting to increase competition lah,” he hoped.
