Indigenous Artist Santiago Savi Celebrates Inclusion of His Work in New SEP Textbooks

The new textbooks will reach the students’ hands on August 28, warned the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Despite the fact that they have been involved in a strong controversy, the indigenous artist Santiago Savi has celebrated that one of his works appears between the pages of the copies.

It was through his social media account that he shared that his work “When we speak our language, we dialogue with nature” will appear in the Second Grade Multiple Languages ​​book.

“This is how my works will look in the new free textbooks of the SEP. All children in Mexico will be able to see them in print. This painting of my own is included in the Second Grade Multiple Languages ​​book for children to tell stories from it,” he shared on Twitter.

The artist from the Ñuu Savi community said he was excited that his works would appear in textbooks: “I remember as a child that the SEP books of the 90’s were a great inspiration to be able to imagine and create new worlds from the illustrations ; and now I’m excited to see my works inside the books!!! (sic)”.

On social networks, the work of Santiago Savi received several positive comments from people who praised his paintings. Although the debate around the content of textbooks continues.

EL UNIVERSAL published that the book consists of various readings. Its pages include texts on equality and the participation of Mexican women in sports.

On his Instagram profile, Santiago Savi describes himself as an indigenous painter, originally from Mexico, who identifies as originally from the Ñuu Savi community.

She has been working in her own art studio in Mexico City since 2015, where she captures flowers, animals, textiles, nahuales and the milpa in her works.

Santiago indicates that he is originally from the Ñuu Savi People, “which in Spanish means “People of the Rain”, they live in the Mixtec region. This covers part of the states of Guerrero and Puebla, although in greater proportion Oaxaca.

His works are available for sale, although he also has murals in New York, United States; Mexico City and Queretaro.
