Of music genres and small towns! Indie Weser with Chinese Football
Band from Wuhan presents their fine emocore with Chinese lyrics in Bremen
A genre of music is often associated with a place. Grunge and Seattle, Hamburger Schule and of course Hamburg, hardcore with New York and emo with the American Midwest. Bands like Modern Saints, Pale or Soulmate from the (more or less) northern German provinces have proven that this is nonsense. The fact that music is more universal and has nothing to do with a place but with passion and feelings is proven by the Chinese band Chinese Football, which combines so dreamy and naturally gentle punk rock with indie rock that only emo can come out of it. And somehow there is a connection between all the Mid-Western emo bands, the groups from the northern German provinces and Chinese football. They all come from small towns in some way. It is true that Wuhan, the city from which Chinese football originated and which became notorious during the corona pandemic, has several million inhabitants and can hardly be considered a small town. But in relation to the metropolises of Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing, Wuhan is rather small.
So emo is created in rather small or medium-sized cities – where life is perhaps a little slower. Just like in Bremen. Where not everything is hip, but honest. That’s also an emo attribute, which Chinese football certainly also embodies and which can be heard in every tone and rhythm. In the lyrics, singer Xu Bo fantasizes in Mandarin about the frustration of youth and the confusion of life. And although hardly a word is understood because very few people in the west will be able to speak Chinese well enough to follow Xu Bo, there is still a familiarity. A deep and inexplicable knowledge of what it (in a song, a look, a life) is or should be about.
Now who is so crazy and books such a band in Bremen? There is of course only one contact point, which has blossomed into an insider tip in the Hanseatic city in recent months. Chinese Football will play on September 1st in the Weserterrassen community center in the IndieWeser series! And that also has something to do with the genre and the small town. Because in the scene and in small towns people still help each other. Book your own fucking life is only possible with people like the people from the Bürgerhaus, who dare to do something and give a band like Chinese Football the chance that they not only need and deserve. No, the band deserves a lot more, namely a big audience. Especially in a small town like Bremen. At least as big as in the video below. So, do yourself and the band a big favor and discover something new, dare something! Buten and binnen, dare and win, risk is rewarded.
Support is provided by the Bremen trio MAKIMONO. The band mixes diverse influences and unconventional songwriting to form walls of dying guitars, powerful basslines and chilled vocals. Somewhere between shoegaze and post-punk, the sound is held together by driving, partly percussive, partly melody-oriented drums. The band, which has only existed for a year, last convinced at the Breminale and now plays a few meters up the dike at INDIE-WESER as support for Chinese Football!
