India’s Growing Energy Demand and the Potential for Renewable Energy Development

[더구루=정등용 기자] India’s energy demand is rapidly increasing. Rapid economic growth and population growth are cited as factors. Accordingly, the Indian government plans to increase the proportion of eco-friendly power generation.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) on the 29th, India’s energy demand is expected to grow by 4.5% per year until 2040, accounting for 25% of global energy consumption. The Indian government plans to increase power generation capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels as a shift to eco-friendly energy is required.

According to data from Statistics India (MOSPI), the proportion of coal in primary energy supply in 2021-2022 was the highest at 72.92%. Next, electricity (8.24%), natural gas (8.16%), and crude oil (7.87%) were found to be the main sources of supply.

India is a country that has the potential to produce renewable energy from various energy sources, including solar power (50.2%), wind power (46.7%), small hydro (1.4%), biomass (1.2%), and sugarcane (0.3%). The development of new and renewable energy utilizing the large territory and diverse climate zones is expected.

India’s renewable energy development is mainly centered on solar energy, hydropower, wind power, and biomass. Recently, India’s renewable energy generation is rapidly increasing, mainly solar energy, and waste energy and hydrogen energy generation are relatively small. Most new and renewable energy power generation facilities are operated by the private sector, and only some are managed by the central government.

As of last May, India’s renewable energy power generation capacity was 179.32GW (gigawatt), accounting for 43.0% of the total power generation capacity. In particular, thermal energy generation amounted to approximately 237.27GW, accounting for 56.8% of the total power generation. Among these, coal power generation accounted for an overwhelming proportion of 49.1%.

The Indian government is continuously increasing renewable energy generation to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. According to India’s National Electricity Plan (NEP), India’s renewable energy capacity is expected to reach 336.5GW by 2026-2027, contributing to 35% of the total energy mix.

Accordingly, it is expected that various opportunities will be created for Korean companies, such as exporting new and renewable energy equipment to India and winning orders for new and renewable energy projects.

An industry official said, “India has significant development potential in all fields of new and renewable energy, including solar energy, wind power, hydropower, and hydrogen energy, due to its vast territory and diverse climate zones, so we must continuously monitor the market and explore opportunities to enter the market.” said.
