India’s G20 Presidency and the Need for Global Change, says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres

New Delhi ∙ UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that India’s G20 presidency will help bring about the much-needed change in the world. India is working for the development of the whole world. He was in Delhi on the occasion of the G20 summit.

“Welcome to the motto ‘One Land, One Family, One Future.” The words from the Upanishads are reflected in the present situation as well. The divide is widening. Mutual trust is eroding. Clashes are rampant. These things are becoming a big disaster. The global financial system is obsolete. A radical restructuring is therefore required.

Such a change is also needed in the UN Security Council. I do not decide whether India should be included in the Security Council. It is up to the member states to take the final decision in that regard. India is one of the most populous countries in the world. India has a multifaceted position. Guterres said that the Security Council needs to be reconstituted according to the current situation.

Guterres’s response comes amid growing demand for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
