Sometimes there are discussions where everything seems so established that it doesn’t make much sense to recover them. In general, there are pretty much consensus on which sequel to ‘Indiana Jones‘ is the best. The last two films hardly enter the conversation, while ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ is wacky and dark enough in its tone that there are those who don’t enter the proposal at all.
A crusade between parents and children
For this reason, there is not much controversy in crowning ‘Indiana Jones and the last crusade’, a return to the basics of the original in many aspects. Not for this reason it is still true that it is a commendable film, and that it is exciting in the small changes it offers with respect to ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. A jewel of adventure and action cinema that can be see today on television through Neox (in streaming it can be enjoyed on platforms such as Disney + and SkyShowtime).
Harrison Ford returns once more as the intrepid archaeologist, also seen in his younger self in a prodigious prologue with River Phoenix. Sean Connery joins as the father of “Junior”, unofficially passing the baton from James Bond, a franchise that was always an elusive dream for Steven Spielberg. On this occasion, the adventure takes them in search of the Holy Grail.
The tone is once again more balanced than in ‘The Temple of Doom’, incorporating the emotional factor through the complex father-son relationship between Henry Jones and Indiana. A relationship that becomes more interesting having seen ‘The Fabelmans’, Spielberg’s intricate exploration of his own past and his parents, with whom he began to mend ties around this period. Not a few see this film in a different light with reconciliations and love triangles.
All this combined with the unrivaled cinematic muscle from the director, which makes continuous displays in action sequences and also in the most intimate ones. The small sequence shots with which he energizes even the scenes that consist of vomiting exposure of the plot are delightful, because his staging always hides a powerful symbolism that develops the narrative and emotion.
It can be argued that it risks less than other ‘Indiana Jones’ movies, but there is no doubt that it is a great adventure movie that still works like a shot. ‘The Last Crusade’ offers several of the best moments of Spielberg’s action movies, as well as bringing us back to the best enemy the brave archaeologist has ever had: the Nazis. The sequence where Ford’s character has to infiltrate them is pure gold and a sample of the level that the film spends.
