Sean Connery plays a huge role in the Indiana Jones franchise, despite only appearing in one movie. Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas cite Connery’s James Bond films as one of the key inspirations for Raiders of the Lost Ark. That ultimately led to one of the show’s brazen triumphs when the actor played Indy’s father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
So it stands to reason that Indy’s latest venture would at least give a nod to Connery’s legacy. In this case, it occurs at the beginning of the film, when Indy and his friend Basil fight the Nazis on a train full of looted art. The premise and execution are consistent with 1978’s The Great Train Robbery, in which Connery would jump from car to car on a vintage locomotive. He performed his own stunts on the scene, making it one of the highlights of his career. Dial of Destiny acknowledges his influence with their own version of the idea.
