Indian Tunnel Disaster: 41 Workers Stuck for Two Weeks, Rescue Efforts Update

Nov 28, 2023 at 7:11 AM Update: 10 minutes ago

Rescue workers in India are only 5 meters away from the 41 workers who have been stuck in a tunnel for more than two weeks. Digging is now done by hand instead of with a drill.

The authorities in India say that the escape corridor is now 52 meters long. At 57 meters the trapped men are reached. A minister from the Indian state of Uttarakhand said a breakthrough is expected “soon”. He had no more details.

Seventeen days ago the construction workers got stuck. The tunnel under construction partly collapsed after a landslide. Several attempts to rescue the men have so far been unsuccessful. For example, several drilling machines broke down and it was often too dangerous to continue drilling.

Since the beginning, the workers have been receiving fresh air, food, water and medicine through a narrow pipeline. The space in which they are trapped is eight meters high and two kilometers long.
