Indian Space Probe Detects Moonquake on Chandrayaan-3 Mission

KOMPAS.com – The Indian space probe on the Chandrayaan-3 mission detected the first evidence of a Moonquake in recent decades.

Quoted from LiveScience, India’s Chandrayaan-3 detected the earthquake on the third day after the spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of the Moon or on Saturday (26/8/2023).

The Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) installed on the Vikram lander detected seismic activity on the surface of the Moon.

Previously, the last Moonquake was detected in the 1970s.

Still under research

India will still investigate to confirm seismic activity on the Moon.

“Has recorded an event that appears to be a natural event on August 26, 2023,” wrote the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on X (formerly Twitter).

“The source of this incident is being investigated,” he added.

If this is confirmed, Moonquakes could give scientists rare insight into the mysterious process by which the interior of the Earth’s moon rotates.

Especially if what the mission detects coincides with other activity, including the movement of the Pragyan rover.

India’s Chandrayaan-3 Mission on the Moon

Quoted from Kompas.com (24/8/2023), India’s goal in the Chandrayaan-3 mass is to explore the region around the south pole of the Moon.

The solar-powered rover, Pragyan, which in Sanskrit means wisdom, is expected to launch from the Vikram (courage) lander on the Chandrayaan-3 space probe.

The mission that India will carry out at the south pole of the Moon is to collect scientific data about the structure of the Moon before the power on the rover turns off after sunset.

“We all hope that we will be successful in bringing new knowledge out of this mission,” said Anil Bhardwaj, Director of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in India.

The Moon’s south pole is a largely uncharted region that is very interesting to explore.

Scientists believe the region holds large amounts of water ice.

So, if discovered and accessible, in the future it could be used as rocket fuel and life support for manned missions in space.

Once carried out a mission to the moon but failed

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is the second opportunity for India to land its spacecraft near the south pole of the Moon.

Previously, India tried to launch the Chandrayaan-2 space probe to the moon in 2019.

However, the mission failed as Chandrayaan-2 failed to land after hitting the Moon due to software glitches.
