KOHIMA, KOMPAS.TV – Villagers in northeast India set fire to military vehicles in anger over the army’s killings. Residents protested the military action that killed six people suspected of being rebels.
The murder in Oting Village, Nagaland state, occurred on Saturday (4/12/2021). Near the border with Myanmar, a group of soldiers mistook a group of residents for rebels.
According to a top Indian military official, soldiers opened fire on a passing truck after receiving information about rebel activity in the area.
It turned out that, according to a local community leader, Nyamtow Konyak, the group were coal mining workers.
Six people died as a result of shooting by these soldiers.

Upon hearing of the attack, angry villagers set fire to two military vehicles in the riots. Soldiers then opened fire and killed seven residents.
A total of 13 civilians died in the two incidents. Meanwhile, the military reported that one soldier was killed by the crowd.
“The incident that led to the killing of civilians in Oting is very damning,” said Neiphiu Rio, a Nagaland official responding to the incident.
Meanwhile, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed regret over the incident. He promised an investigation would be conducted by the government.
