Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping Agree to Step Up Efforts to Resolve Border Issue

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to step up efforts to resolve the border issue, a factor of conflict between the two countries.

According to Indian media such as the Hindustan Times and the Associated Press on the 25th local time, the two leaders, who are visiting Johannesburg, South Africa to attend the BRICS summit, made this agreement during an impromptu meeting held on the 24th.

Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra said at a briefing to Indian reporters that Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s concerns about the border issue to President Xi, who had an impromptu meeting.

Deputy Minister Kwatra also added that the two leaders agreed to work to ease tensions and early withdrawal of troops currently in confrontation in Ladakh, a border disputed area.

The two countries, which share a border of about 3,800 km in length, even went to war in 1962 over the border issue, but failed to delineate the border line, so they are facing the actual control line as a boundary.

Relations between the two countries also deteriorated, especially after clashes between the two countries in Ladakh in 2020 killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.

Previously, the two countries discussed ways to stabilize the situation in the military commanders’ dialogue last week.
