From the video circulating on social media, it appears that Bhagwant himself scooped up the Kali Bein river water using a plastic cup, then drank it completely.
Bhagwant wants to prove that river water is safe for consumption. Moreover, the Kali Bein river has been known as a river that is considered sacred by the community. Evidently, until the end of the event Bhagwant did not feel any pain.
“Chief Minister Punjab openly drank a glass of polluted water from a ‘holy’ river to prove the water was clean. Now he is in hospital,” tweeted Ashok Swain, a professor from Sweden’s Uppsala University.
But on the other hand, the river was very polluted by pollutants. The raw water from the polluted river that Bhagwant drank was the cause of his stomach ache on Wednesday (20/7).
The doctor who treated Bhagwant said the politician had an infection in his digestive tract. After receiving medical treatment, Bhagwant was allowed to leave the hospital the next day.
The disaster that befell Bhagwant has become the subject of ridicule by Indians. On average they even laughed at Bhagwant’s stomachache incident.
“The water from the ‘sacred’ river is too holy for the stomach,” tweeted @filip_katund.
“Faith turns out to not only make people stupid, but very stupid,” added @Ama_008_
“May all politicians drink a glass of water from this ‘sacred’ river every day. Until we get clean water or a new politician. Congratulations!” said Raghu Bhannik.
