A shocking case of rape and murder of a female doctor who was resting in the hospital happened in India. The Indian police are also in the spotlight because they are considered to be slow in investigating the case which has sparked outrage and led to a mass strike by doctors in India.
Reported BBC, Times of India and NDTVOn Sunday (18/8/2024), the rape of a 31-year-old female intern shocked India and sparked public outrage. The victim’s body was found in the conference hall of RG Kar Medical College last week, half-naked and badly injured.
The victim reportedly went to the hall to rest after working a 36-hour work shift. The police have arrested a volunteer worker at the hospital and the case has been transferred from the local police to India’s CBI after widespread complaints about the slow handling of the case.

The rape and murder of the doctor has also sparked a national strike by doctors in India. More than a million people are expected to join the strike.
Hospitals and clinics in India have been turning away non-emergency patients. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) described the doctor’s murder as a ‘crime on a barbaric level due to the lack of safe spaces for women’ and asked for the country’s support in their fight for justice.
IMA president RV Asokan said doctors had suffered and protested against violence for years. He said that the rape and murder of doctors in this hospital were ‘on a different level’.
“If such crimes could happen in a medical college in a city, it shows that doctors are not safe everywhere,” he said.
Doctors at several state hospitals have announced that they are suspending elective procedures (non-urgent work) indefinitely earlier this week. The IMA also issued a list of demands including strengthening laws to protect medical workers from violence, increasing security levels in hospitals and creating safe places to rest.
They called for a ‘careful and professional investigation’ into the killing and prosecution of those involved in the vandalism, as well as compensation for the woman’s family. There have been more rape incidents in the headlines in India since the doctor’s death and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that “horrific behavior against women must be punished severely and immediately”.
