Kochi: A package boat carrying 2,500 kg of narcotics worth Rs 15,000 crore from Makran port in Iran entered Indian waters and was under surveillance by the Navy.
The drugs seized so far as part of Operation Samudragupta belonged to the Pakistani drug syndicate ‘Haji Salim Network’. But the seals of other cartels were also inscribed on the sacks seized this time. An investigation has been launched into the source and ownership of the drug. This time, the seized parcels have seals like scorpion and bitcoin. Thel is a trademark of Haji Salim Network. The drug parcels are wrapped in sewn plastic bags using the ‘Al Hussain’ Basmati rice brand produced in Pakistan. The drug seized from the sea was brought to Kochi port yesterday.
The group escaped after the ship sank
Kochi: When the Indian Navy’s ship and helicopter came to know that the drug smuggling gang was following them, they entered after sinking the mother ship carrying the drugs, informed the officials.
It is suspected that more than what was caught was drowned in the sea. The mothership departed from Iran’s Chabahar port. Chemicals are buried in containers that are watertight even if submerged in the sea. The Navy is trying to find the sunken drugs.
NCB Deputy Director Sanjay Kumar Singh is staying in Kochi to coordinate the investigation following the drug seizure. Following the suspicion that the other smugglers on board had entered the uninhabited villages of Lakshadweep in small boats, the search was intensified at sea and on land.
The Navy has previously seized narcotic drugs from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which are smuggled in the ‘triangles of death’ of drug cartels centered on Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran and Myanmar-Thailand-Laos.
