Indian Lunar Rover in Critical Condition after Landing on Moon – Updates on Vikram and Pragyan

Jakarta – India’s lunar rover robot has successfully landed on the south pole of the Moon. This robot has been in ‘sleep mode’ since September 2 2023. But unfortunately, not long ago it was good news, the situation is now worrying.

The lunar lander has successfully traveled for 40 days to the Moon. Before entering sleep mode, this probe carried out the task of collecting data from the surface of the Moon in the first week after landing.

The two robots that have been named, namely the lander robot Vikram and the rover Pragyan, have been programmed to hibernate and protect electrical components during extreme ‘lunar night’ conditions. This hibernation lasts for two weeks and causes temperatures on the Moon to drop to -250 degrees Celsius.

The spacecraft did not wake up again and lost contact with India’s space center, so far it has not been able to become active again. Until now, Indian Space Agency (ISRO) scientists are still trying to make contact with the robot.

“Efforts have been made to establish communication with lander Vikram and rover Pragyan to ascertain their wake conditions. As of now, no signal has been received from them. Efforts to establish contact will continue,” ISRO wrote in a tweet on their official X account @ isro, quoted detikInet.

In the initial plan initiated by ISRO, their lunar lander was designed to be active again on September 22. However, until the planned time had passed, the vehicle had not yet become active again.

ISRO also claims that the lander has the ability to survive in very extreme conditions. The materials used in the vehicle are also claimed to be able to withstand the Moon’s temperatures, which can become very cold.

ISRO scientists say that hopes are fading for the robot’s revival. There is only about a 50% chance that the device can survive freezing temperatures.
