The Supreme Court of India has formed a special bench comprising Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna to hear the plea of Bilkis Bano against the release of 11 convicts involved in the 2002 Gujarat riots. Bano, who was gang-raped and had her family members killed during the riots, has appealed against the Gujarat government’s decision to grant remission to the convicts who were serving life sentences. The plea was earlier mentioned before the Chief Justice of India, who had acknowledged the gravity of the case and decided to constitute the special bench. The hearing will take place at a later date.
