The ‘Women’s Seat Allocation Constitutional Amendment Bill’, which overwhelmingly passed the Indian House of Representatives, was unanimously passed in the Senate after 11 hours of debate.

The constitutional amendment calls for 33% of seats in the federal House of Representatives and state legislatures to be reserved for women.
When the constitutional amendment was finally passed, Prime Minister Narendra Mori, who actively promoted it, could not hide his joy, saying it gave it historical significance and congratulating the 1.4 billion Indians.
There have been six attempts to amend the constitution to allocate seats for women since 1996, but each time they were thwarted by conservatives.
There are 950 million female voters in India, more than half of the population.
Meanwhile, there have been quite a few women in leadership positions, including female prime ministers and female party leaders.
However, in the federal House of Representatives and state legislatures, they account for only 15% and 10%, respectively, raising issues of representation and gender inequality.
The women’s quota constitutional amendment will not be implemented immediately, but is expected to be implemented as early as 2029 after the 2026 census and constituency adjustment.
