In a devastating incident, a 27-year-old Indian journalist lost his life in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in Manhattan. Fazil Khan, who worked as a journalist in New York, was a victim of the blaze that was ignited by a lithium-ion battery. The fire accident not only claimed Khan’s life but also resulted in injuries to approximately 17 other individuals. The incident occurred in a six-story residential building located at 2 St. Nicholas Place in Harlem, Manhattan.

Fazil Khan was an aspiring journalist affiliated with the renowned New York-based media company, The Hechinger Report. His focus was primarily on exploring innovation and inequality in education, shedding light on important issues within the education system. Khan’s commitment to his work and dedication towards bringing about positive change made him a valued member of The Hechinger Report.

They assured the public that they are leaving no stone unturned in providing all possible assistance to facilitate the repatriation of his remains to his family in India. In a heartfelt post on X Saturday, the Consulate mourned the loss of the young journalist and stated, “Saddened to learn about the death of 27-year-old Indian national Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, NY.” The Consulate further added that they are in constant contact with Khan’s family and friends, extending their support during this difficult time.

The fire, which originated on the 3rd floor of the building, quickly spread, trapping victims on the 5th floor. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded promptly to the 2-alarm fire at 2 St. Nicholas Place in Harlem on Friday afternoon. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find individuals on the fire escape and people hanging out of windows on the fifth floor. The situation was dire, with victims desperately seeking rescue.

In total, there were 18 patients affected by the fire, with four in critical condition. Joseph Pfeifer, the Fire Department’s first deputy commissioner, addressed the media on Friday, revealing that one person who was initially in critical condition later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. However, the victim’s identity had not been disclosed at that time.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries are widely used due to their high energy density and long lifespan, incidents like these highlight the need for proper precautions to prevent accidents. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is still ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to determine the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.

As Fazil Khan’s family prepares to bid him farewell and bring him back to his homeland, his untimely demise leaves a void in the world of journalism.
