Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Workers at Wistron Corp., one of the assembly plants iPhone in Bangalore, India, went berserk because he was annoyed by the fall in wages and the working hours policy.
Nearly 2,000 employees left the office after completing their work, then went on a rampage and destroyed the company’s furniture, assembly units, and even set fire to vehicles.
Employees are reportedly disappointed that the company did not pay the salaries promised when they joined.
“Engineering graduates are promised Rs21 thousand, and it is reduced to Rs16 thousand, and then to Rs12 thousand, non-technical graduates are reduced to Rs8 thousand, we are frustrated to see this,” said one employee, quoted as saying 9to5Mac, Tuesday (15/12).
The iPhone device manufacturer is said to have lost Rs437 thousand. The biggest loss was due to theft of thousands of iPhones taken when the violence occurred.
Damage also occurred to the assembly area and factory equipment in the two hours of violence.
Wistron spokesperson Joyce Chou said she was very surprised to see the protest. It will continue to follow further investigations by the authorities.
“We are following the law and supporting the authorities with their investigation,” Chou was quoted as saying Wall Street Journal.
Reported The Times of India, Apple’s spokesman in the United States, said it had carried out an investigation at the Wistron facility and had field personnel in India to assist with the investigation.
“Apple is dedicated to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated with dignity and respect,” he said.
Local police said they had detained 100 people and were investigating the incident and the workers’ claims.
