Indian Government Imposes Minimum Export Price for Basmati Rice to Control Prices before Local Elections

The Indian government said yesterday that it imposed a minimum export price for “basmati rice” shipments of $1,200 per ton, as the country tries to control local prices before local elections.

India, the world’s largest rice exporter, last July banned non-basmati white rice exports, and last Friday imposed a 20% duty on parboiled rice exports.

The government said in a statement that some traders were classifying white rice as “basmati” to overcome export restrictions after the ban was issued.

She added that setting a minimum export price would help the authorities to ensure that white rice was not exported as basmati.
