The victim, who hails from the Dalit caste, was attacked en masse in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.
“Hathras rape victim is being treated at Safdarjung hospital to get better health facilities. She died this morning,” an official at Safdarjung hospital was quoted as saying Gulf News without mentioning his name. (Read: 86-Year-Old Grandmother Raped by Indian Youth: ‘I’m like your Grandma ….’)
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and said law and order in the Indian state was very bad.
“A Dalit girl who was tortured in Hathras died at Safdarjung Hospital. For two weeks, she struggled with life and death in the hospital. Incidents of rape in Hathras, Shahjahanpur and Gorakhpur have rocked the state,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Law and order in Uttar Pradesh has deteriorated considerably. There is nothing for the safety of women. Criminals commit crimes openly. The murderer of this girl must be severely punished. Yogi Adityanath, you are responsible for the safety of women from Uttar Pradesh,” the politician continued , referring to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Two days ago, Hathras Police Superintendent, Vikrant Vir, said four suspects in the rape case had been arrested. (Also read: This woman was raped by several men in front of her husband who was taken hostage)
According to him, the incident started when the victim went to the fields with his mother on September 14, 2020. The victim then disappeared after going to the fields.
The victim was later found seriously injured as a result of the brutal attack, in which his tongue was seriously injured which the victim allegedly fought one of the suspects who attempted to strangle him.
The police inspector said initially officers only knew that Sandip, 20, was the suspect who tried to kill the victim. Sandip was arrested shortly after the victim was found covered in wounds.
However, in a statement given to the judge, the victim said that apart from Sandip, there were three other suspects who had raped her. The three of them are Ramu, Lavkush and Ravi. The three suspects also tried to suffocate them while resisting, which resulted in injuring the victim’s tongue.
Luvkush, Ramu and Ravi were arrested on Saturday, 19 September 2020.
