New Delhi, Jurnas.com – Indian explorers who are on a mission to the Moon, confirmed the discovery of traces of sulfur at the south pole of the Moon. The announcement was made on Wednesday (30/8).
Last week, India became the first country to land a spacecraft near the south pole, which has so far been unexplored, and the fourth country to land on the Moon.
“The Chandrayaan-3 Rover’s Laser-Induction Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument has made the first in-situ measurements of the elemental composition of the lunar surface near the south pole,” said the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). AFP.
“These in-situ measurements clearly confirm the presence of sulfur in the region, something that was not possible with the instruments on the orbiter,” he added.
Spectrographic analysis also confirmed the presence of aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium and titanium on the lunar surface, with additional measurements indicating the presence of manganese, silicon and oxygen.
It is known, Chandrayaan-3 has attracted public attention since it was launched almost six weeks ago in front of thousands of spectators. Its successful landing on the Moon last week came just days after the Russian plane crashed in the same area.
In 2014, India also became the first Asian country to put a spacecraft into orbit around Mars, and plans to send a probe to the sun in September.
