Dibrugarh (Assam) ∙ Indian boxing legend MC Mary Kom has retired. Mary, a 6-time world champion and Olympic medalist, announced her retirement from boxing this morning. Forty-one-year-old Mary Kom said she decided to retire because players over the age of 40 are not allowed to participate in elite-level matches under the International Boxing Association.
“My passion for boxing has not stopped. But due to age limit I cannot participate in international competitions. I have been forced to retire from boxing. “I am stepping down with the satisfaction of being able to achieve everything I wanted in life,” said Mary Kom in her retirement announcement.
Mary Kom holds the record of being the first female boxer to become world champion 6 times. Mary Kom, who won bronze at the 2012 Olympics, is the first Indian woman boxer to achieve this feat. After her first World Championship in 2003, the country honored Mary Kom with the Arjuna Award. He also received the Khel Ratna Award in 2009. Mary was also awarded Padma Shri in 2006, Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Padma Vibhushan in 2020. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
